Pullin stood in line of duty | Peter Jackson

SOME of ‘s grand old rugby men accompanied one of ‘s most revered captains on his final journey, from the family farm to a country church by the Severn.

Mike Rafter, Alan Morley, Mike Fry, Austin Sheppard, John Doubleday and Peter Colston paid their last respects to John Pullin, a captain who refused to abandon England’s match in Dublin for security reasons.

“My father is remembered for his generous spirit and for doing the right thing,” his son, Jonathan, told mourners at St John’s Church in Aust. “He would never shirk anything. He had a responsibility to lead England into that match and that sense of duty was never in doubt.”
