Paul Rees: The WRU’s licence to cull is really about control

Paul Rees argues the Welsh Rugby Union’s decision to reduce the country’s professional regions from four to three is ultimately about control rather than strengthening Welsh rugby.

A licence to Kill will be screening at the Welsh Rugby Union’s offices for the foreseeable future.

Four regions will be cut to three or, put another way, one will be based in west Wales rather than two with the operations in Cardiff and Newport surviving.
Cardiff and the Dragons have been offered licences to play in competitions authorised by the WRU, the United Rugby Championship along with the Champions and Challenge Cups, although typical of the disdainful way the governing body has dealt with the regions for many of the last 20 years, the two do not know what the terms of the licence are....
