Rugby’s place in world sport’s big picture is relatively secure – it is unlikely to be airbrushed out by field hockey, lawn bowls or clay pigeon shooting any time soon – but it will never share a rung on the economic ladder with baseball, where the Dominican outfielder Juan Soto is currently playing his way (when he isn’t injured) through a $765m, 15-year contract with the New York Mets. Yes, you read that right.

Whatever Jac Morgan trousers at Gloucester next season, it will be small change by comparison. But who can say that in terms of transformative potential, he is the lesser figure?
