Mike Tindall has announced his retirement from rugby, becoming the last member of the 2003 Rugby World Cup winning England squad to hang up his boots.
The 35 year-old was capped 75 times by England and was made captain for the 6 Nations in 2011, guiding England to the championship in the absence of Lewis Moody.
Having joined Gloucester from Bath in 2005, Tindall would make 131 appearances for the cherry and whites, working on a player/coach basis last season.
Under the new management of David Humphreys, however, the centre was not offered a renewed contract in favour of the appointment of Nick Walshe as backs and attack coach.
“I had to ask myself if I wanted to go and play somewhere else. Can you get emotionally attached to another club? I don’t think you can,” Tindall admitted.
“I will go to games at Gloucester and I will still be a fan.
“It’s been a great club, the fans have been brilliant, we have some good banter and it’s been a great part of my life since 2005.
“I wouldn’t have thought I will be back. You have to face the big bad world sometime and now is the right time to do that.”
