20 Questions: Topsy Ojo – London Irish winger

Describe your season to date?
Frustrating! We had a bit of momentum but fell away before Christmas, which was disappointing. So we're looking to pick up again now.
How's your testimonial going?
Really well, I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Having something that big to do away from rugby has been great and it's been good working with the charities.
Any major events coming up?
I've got my big dinner on March 26, a golf day on May 7 and our legends game at Sunbury on May 17. Details are on www.topsyojo.com
You're an elder statesman at 28?
A young elder statesman, please! It's a bit strange but I've settled into the role now. Being one of the senior guys creates a leadership role.
Ever considered leaving Irish?
Not really, it's been easy each time I've come to a contract renewal. My family's settled, I'm enjoying my rugby and London Irish is my club.
Like to finish your career there?
Absolutely. I've just signed for another three years and hopefully it's going to be an exciting time with the new ownership and training facilities in place.
Career highlights so far?
Being capped twice by England in 2008 was a highlight. And even though we lost, going to a Premiership final and Heineken semi-final with Irish was brilliant. They were massive occasions and we need more of those.
Best match played in?
Irish v Munster at the Madejski in 2010. It was probably the most intense atmosphere I've played in. We battered each other for 80 minutes in front of an all-Irish crowd and we won 23-17. To be part of that was really special.
Heineken Cup or Anglo-Welsh League?
Heineken Cup. Just for the opportunity to test yourself against Europe's elite. The atmosphere is unique and games are often Test level.
Best tries you've scored?
I got a long-range effort at Bath once which involved a double-pirouette and won me an award. And my length of the field try against New Zealand in Auckland is up there as well.
Regret not adding to your two caps?
Yes, but I missed most of 2009 through injury and once you're out of the picture, it's hard to get back.
Where does the name Topsy originate?
I'm of Nigerian descent and my full name is Temiptope, so I got called Topsy from an early age. Even my mum calls me that – unless I'm in trouble, then I get the full name!
Other sporting interests?
I played football and am a big Liverpool fan. I enjoy lots of sports on TV, including America football, cricket, tennis and football.
How do you chill-out?
The testimonial keeps me busy and I'm just finishing off a business degree. I like to relax by watching films and listening to music. I'm a fan of Kanye West.
Best films seen recently?
I've just seen the new Mark Wahlburg one, Lone Survivor, and 12 Years A Slave, both of which I would recommend. I'm more into action stuff.
Enjoy food and cooking?
I love a Nando's, you can't beat that as a rugby player. But I do a lot of cooking at home now and my speciality is beef chilli-con-carne.
If you could invite three special dinner guests, who?
Jamie Foxx, the actor; Steven Gerrard, who is one of my favourite footballers; and Usain Bolt, who I'm sure would be very entertaining.
Pet hates and annoyances?
I'm fairly tolerant person but bad drivers do my head in, especially people who cut you up. You can pre-empt when they're going to make a bad decision.
Biggest change in rugby in your 10 years?
Speed and physicality. Players are bigger and stronger and wingers are probably 10kgs heavier than they were six years ago.
If Irish could sign three top players, who?
Kieran Read, because he's the best in the world right now; Seilala Mapusua in his prime, because he was a legend at Irish; and Bismarck du Plessis, because he's an animal.
