The “True Grit” award for the 2025 Six Nations has to go to Tom Curry.
I will admit to being one of the sceptics who thought that the Sale and England flanker would struggle to last the course following his recovery from hip surgery lasting six hours, and reinforced by stem-cell treatment.
Nor did the news that his training between matches had to be shorter and specially-tailored inspire confidence – but none of it stopped Curry.
His strength, tenacity, and cunning at the breakdown was intrinsic to England’s four wins in succession over France, Scotland, Italy, and Wales.
It meant Curry finished the tournament as a starter at either openside or blindside in most post-Six Nations selections for the 2025 Lions starting line-up.
For me Tom Curry’s best position is, and always has been, openside – but with his guts and sheer determination to defy the odds you would back him whichever shirt he is given.
