We are just over a month away from the first British and Irish Lions vs Australia Test of 2025. The squad is stacked with phenomenal talent.
Andy Farrell will have some tough decisions to make in terms of selection. The back row, in particular, is going to be fiercely debated.
Across all four nations, there is a plethora of world-class talent. Jac Morgan is one of two players flying the flag for Wales.
Morgan is a tremendous talent and will have his eyes firmly set on a starting spot.
Jac Morgan
From Brynamman, Morgan, a Welsh speaker with a deep love for rugby, has shown remarkable resilience in his journey.
He earned his stripes at Cwmtwrch RFC and Aberavon RFC while also putting in the hard yards as a mechanical engineering apprentice.
Morgan’s professional journey began with the Scarlets. Coming through the academy, he made his debut in 2019.
The flanker took the field with the Llanelli-based team against London Irish in the Challenge Cup.
His talent was on full display early. In 2020, he won the Player of the Month award. With the Ospreys, he truly became a prominent figure in Welsh rugby.
Morgan became a key starter and is central to the team’s identity. This is evidenced by his being named as captain for the 2024/25 season.
Morgan has made a massive impact not only on the club but also on the country. Representing his nation at many levels, Morgan will be important in this new era of Welsh rugby.
Wearing the armband for Wales U20s in the 2020 Six Nations, he commanded the field, leading in turnovers and shining brightest in a memorable victory over England.
Two years later, he earned his first senior cap while at the Ospreys. Left out of the squad for the South Africa tour in 2022, he came roaring back in the autumn, scoring four tries in two games.
As of late, Morgan has truly become a leader for Wales, co-captaining the side for the 2023 World Cup. He also led Wales out throughout the 2025 Six Nations.
Welsh rugby is navigating troubled waters right now, and Morgan will be a big part of the rebuild.
A super year
Morgan brings tireless drive, fearless tackling, and turnover excellence to the game. He is a standout force, even when the odds are stacked against his side.
You always notice the Welshman when he’s on the pitch—a dynamic ball carrier who hardly ever takes a backward step.
The 25-year-old has had another great year. Statistically, his URC numbers are strong. It’s in defence where he makes the biggest difference.
Morgan has made 179 tackles with an 89% success rate. When a team needs a turnover in the big moments, you can always rely on Morgan, as his 15 turnovers prove.
He doesn’t need to shout to be heard. This season, his quiet authority and unbreakable work ethic have spoken louder than words.
Fierce competition
There is no doubt Morgan is an unreal talent, but the competition in the Lions’ squad is fierce. Josh van der Flier will likely get the starting job if everything goes his way.
However, Sale Sharks’ Tom Curry is hitting form at the right time. Then you have the likes of Ben Earl, Ollie Chessum, and Jack Conan, who are all elite.
Morgan’s versatility across the back row gives him a valuable edge. The Welshman will be looking to be a real standout in a stacked squad.
The battle for a starting Test spot in the back row is going to be one to keep an eye on.
If Morgan can shine in adversity, think what he might unleash in a team built to conquer.
