Matt Carley struck an important blow for referees and the game in general when he overruled television match official Mike Adamson during last weekend’s first Test between South Africa and New Zealand.

Adamson asked (told is the more appropriate verb) Carley to look at a challenge by the All Blacks No.8 Ardie Savea on his opposite number Jasper Wiese 11 minutes from the end when New Zealand were winning by 10 points having been battered up front.
