It was not that long ago that Top 14 finals used to be tight, largely risk averse affairs. The occasion tended to be the winner, but the winds of change that have blown through the game gusted strongly in Paris last weekend when Toulouse and Montpellier both started in a hurry and never let up.

The pace of the game was relentless and that there were only five tries was down in no small part to the weather with the Paris heatwave prompting a thunderstorm that forced the players off in the second half for 12 minutes for a welcome breather.
