Ampthill v Doncaster: Turner gives new recruits their chance to impress

AMPTHILL face a tough start to the season with Doncaster first up followed by Ealing away.

After giving 22 players their debuts in the two preseason games with , head coach Paul Turner names 14 debutants for the Knights' visit.

Following his man-ofthe-match performance against the Blues two weeks ago, Alex Humfrey starts on the in the only change to Ampthill's starting pack from last weekend's friendly.

Vice-captain Sam Hudson moves to No.8 with Devante Onojaife among the replacements. ' Harvey Beaton and ' Alex Pleasants also start on the bench.

Louis Grimoldby captains the side again this season with Matt Marsh getting the starting nine jersey this week. ' Joe Roberts partners Jarryd Sage in the centres.

Turner said: “The overall objective for the season is to be competitive but with two of the favourites for the Championship title in the first two rounds, with Doncaster visiting Dillingham Park tomorrow followed by Ealing away next weekend, it's safe to say we haven't been given an easy start.

“That said, the two games against a strong Bedford Blues were a valuable exercise and lots of the boys made a strong challenge to start against the Knights tomorrow.

“We have fourteen Championship debutants who are looking forward to the challenge.”

Knights have had more preparation than Amps after recent action in the Trailfinders Cup against Ealing and Saracens but head coach Steve Boden expects a fierce battle.

Boden said: “Ampthill beat a good Bedford side last week, a great result, so we realise what they're going to be capable of.

“It's a huge challenge going there; they are a very good side and very well-coached but it's a challenge we should be relishing after so long off.”

Boden hands out ten competitive debuts in his first league match in charge. Jack Spittle starts on the left wing having missed the Trailfinders Cup through injury. Kyle Evans and Tom Bacon complete the back three.

Former Jersey duo Mark Best and James Newey link up in Donny colours for the first time in midfield with Sam Olver and James Mitchell starting in the half-backs.

Boden sticks with the front row that started away at Ealing last time out with Matt Smith and Will Britton at lock and a back row packed with pace and power in John Kelly, Sam Graham and Guido Volpi.
