I DISAGREE with Paul Sheehan’s complaints about swan dives in general, and in particular about Chris Ashton‘s patented Ash Splash version in the letters column on October 19. Rather than being arrogant or disrespectful I view it as an expression of joy at the team having produced an outstanding, exciting try.
I’ve seen many, and they were always at the end of a terrific series of play when the player was well clear of any defenders, so in little danger of wasting the try as long as they held onto the ball. If they do lose it, then yes they deserve the laughs and won’t do it again! Otherwise why try to make the game less joyful.
