British/Irish League is the way forward

THE attendance figures for Leinster v Munster (51,589) and Lions v Scarlets (1,771) on October 18 highlight a major problem with the URC – the lack of supporter interest in fixtures with unfamiliar teams. The impossibility for the vast majority of travelling to another continent to watch their team play away, results in a lack of atmosphere and interest in the fixtures of Italian and South Africa teams. Spectators are more interested in fixtures with familiar rivals with whom they share a history of competition.
