WILL Roberts believes Tynedale’s ruthless approach and game-by-game attitude will allow his side to continue climbing the table.
Winger Roberts, 23, set the tone with three impressive tries in in last weekend’s 38 – 17 win over Hull in front of 500 fans at Tynedale Park.
He told The Rugby Paper: “We’re all understanding our roles and I’m benefiting from the opportunities because of it.
“The hat-trick was a credit to the work of the team as a whole, not just for the work I put in.
“The first try was off the back of a pre-planned scrum launch which is a credit to the structure, the second one was a cross-field kick, and I knew our number ten could put the ball on a blade of grass if he wanted to so he put it on a plate for me.
“The third was a kick chase and turnover try, so again we’re playing in the right areas and putting other teams under so much pressure they’re struggling to deal with us.”
Tynedale, who came into this weekend lying seventh in National Two North, have always looked after Roberts, who has been with the club since he was six. The 16-stone speedster says that his whole outlook on life and in rugby has been shaped by his local boyhood club.
“My club is a credit to the game of rugby,” said Roberts. “The culture Tynedale has created with the people and the atmosphere in my opinion very much unrivalled.
“With it being the only club this far north it has naturally become very family knit and close. Everyone knows each other, everyone is from a similar background and it’s the type of place with no big egos.
“Everyone who’s here is here because they really want to be. We’re not paid players and the fans know this, but every weekend they still turn out to support us.
“I love being a winger. Growing up I was always naturally quick so the position suits me very well, I’m always on the edge and pride myself on trying to beat someone one on one. Every time I get a one on one I feel like I’m going to score by putting myself in the right positions and get around people to score in the corner.
“We don’t fear anyone and we feel like we can beat anyone on the field.
“Despite the start to the season we feel we’ve developed an identity, and as a result we’ve started reaping the rewards. I anticipate we’ll climb the table this season.”
There’s never a dull moment for the flyer. Off the field Roberts is currently in the throes of taking over his parents’ health conference business, ISENC. It will see him helping cities all over the world to organise marathons and half marathons. His father David Roberts was involved in The Great North Run since its inception.
