What’s in The Rugby Paper: 24/09/23

One of the most widely anticipated World Cup pool matches in history takes place this Saturday, and you can find all the action and analysis from vs South Africa in The Rugby Paper this Sunday.

England have made 12 changes to their starting XV for their match against Chile tomorrow, and while they are expected to win comfortably, the intriguing question of whether they can show more offensively than they have done in the first two games could well be answered in our report for that match.

Nick Cain will be covering that game, and looking at the which brilliant players across the globe this latest has discovered, with Peter Jackson looking at the players who have benefitted from World Rugby's change in eligibility law.

Several of those players have come from emerging nations, and though hammered Namibia on Thursday night, Italy and Uruguay played out a thrilling clash on Wednesday, and Argentina vs on Friday and Georgia vs Portugal on Saturday are set to be hard-fought, entertaining games with reports for all those matches in the paper too.

On Sunday end the two-week wait to get their campaign back on track as they face Tonga, while Wales and are set to share a thrilling battle which could see the latter knocked out at the group stage for the first time in their history, and we will look ahead to those two critical games.

Optimism is a theme present in many of our interviews this week, as Mike Ford shares that he's convinced England are on the right road to a dream final at the Stade de France, and Italy fly-half Tommy Allan warns the that the Azzurri have never been in a better position to cause a World Cup upset.

Topsy Ojo strays away from that theme somewhat, sharing his frustration at England's constant kicking as he waits for his former side's attack to fully unlock, but perhaps the women's team will fair better as they host Canada at Sandy Park.

Back in the Premiership Tigers tyro versatile back Jamie Shillcock reveals his excitement of playing in front of a packed out Welford Road, while Bath born and bred flanker Miles Reid outlines his aspirations for the season.

And in the Championship  and US Eagles flanker Paddy Ryan discusses how his career has taken off in the last few months, and with their strong start to the Premiership Cup continuing and the women's equivalent Allianz Cup getting underway, both tournaments will be covered in depth across our pages.
