Former Wales international Rhys Webb has tested positive for a growth hormone following an unexpected check by the French Anti-Doping Agency carried out in July.
The 34-year-old who won 40 caps has signed for Pro D2 side Biarritz Olympique and scored a try in the club's first match of the season, a 35-18 win over Colomiers.
However, Webb was left out of the side that lost 55-0 to Brive at Valence-Romans on Friday.
The player has been provisionally suspended and faces a possible four-year suspension.
President of Biarritz Jean-Baptiste Aldige said: “We have been notified of this information. The club, which is not involved, is awaiting deliberations and the investigation.”
In May, Webb became the third Wales veteran to announce his retirement before the World Cup, announcing his decision on social media 100 days before the tournament kicked off.
Webb said “an opportunity to play abroad” amid Welsh rugby's “difficulties” influenced his decision.
After being overlooked by Wayne Pivac, Webb was recalled by Wales coach Warren Gatland for the 2023 Six Nations and was then named in the nation's extended World Cup training squad.
Webb made his Wales debut in 2012 and made two appearances on the 2017 British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand, he ended his international career with 40 caps and as many points.
