AN outstanding defensive performance laid the foundations for Stourbridge’s superb home win over Old Redcliffians.
Stourbridge dominated the first half and forward pressure presented kicker Rickie Aley with four penalties.
Aley also converted a long-range try from flying right winger Dallas Ororo to make it 19 points for the home side, while Old Reds could muster only one penalty from the boot of fly-half Ashley Groves.
The Stourbridge pack were on top throughout, well led by debutant captain James Rodley, while man-of-the-match Chad Thorne was a constant thorn in the side of Old Reds.
The platform created by the forwards gave Aley plenty of options, with centres Ollie Gittoes and Ashley Beck asking questions of a well-drilled Old Reds defence.
Old Reds came back with an unconverted try by left winger Samuel Rees after 48 minutes. The game looked to be winding down to a scoreless last half an hour, only for Edward Harvey to raise the excitement with a try converted by Grove to add some excitement at the end. However, Stour were able to see out the game without further alarm.
