Gloucester have sealed the signing of Zach Mercer, who will join the Cherry and Whites at the beginning of next season.
It ends a summer of speculation, where our rugby transfer expert Neil Fissler first reported that the former Bath man was planning to continue with Montpellier for the 2022/23 season, and then that Gloucester were the frontrunners to secure his services subsequently.
That is ultimately what has transpired and at still only 25-years-old, Mercer will feel he can break into England’s set-up and have a lengthy international career.
And with the number eight having confirmed that he had been told playing for England at the next World Cup remained an option if he agreed a move to his native country from September 2023, eyes will be fixed across the Channel to see if Mercer can impress Eddie Jones.
Speaking on the club’s website, Mercer said: “To be given the opportunity to come back and play in the Premiership with Gloucester is one that I couldn’t turn down.
“Alex Brown, Skivs [Gloucester head coach George Skivington] and the whole coaching group are building a strong team and a great environment on the field, and I believe I can add a lot of value.
“I have another season here with Montpellier and I’ll be giving all my focus to the club in trying to secure back-to-back titles and European cup success.”
Skivington added: “We’re building a solid group at the club, with very little movement in or out, so to have secured Zach for next season is a testament to the player he is both on and off the field.
“His performances for Bath and Montpellier are evidence enough of his capabilities. He has a top-class work rate, outstanding ball carrying skills and is solid in defence. He will undoubtably bring a further dimension to add to our current backrow.
“We’ve got a big season coming up, which will remain our sole focus; it’s great to have such a talent coming in to compliment the set up next year.”
