Second-half try blitz gets brave Scarlets over the line

BRAD MOOARpraised his side's battling qualities after the made it two wins from two with an away win at on Friday night.

The Welsh side defeated in week one and made the trip to Scotstoun with a spring in their step.

The teams were tied at 6-6 at the interval, but three tries in the first 11 minutes after half-time put the visitors in control and then they weathered a late fightback.

Mooar said: “I thought our defence was outstanding.

We created opportunities through our line speed, our maul defence was strong and then the heart we showed on the line was just outstanding.

“We expected a response from Glasgow after their result against the Cheetahs the previous week, they are a better side that that.

“I know Dave Rennie really well, I knew he would have had them biting at each other's ankles and going for it during the week to bring some real physicality, but we are a physical team as well.

“It is great to see the guys expressing themselves on the field.”

Glasgow head coach Rennie, whose side now have just one losing bonus point from two matches, said: “We played a lot better than last week, but we switched off a bit after half-time and you cannot do that against quality teams.”

The Warriors took the lead thanks to a penalty by stand-off Brandon Thomson.

Two Dan Jones penalties put the Scarlets 6-3 up before a late Thomson effort made it 6-6 after 40 minutes. A third Thomson effort put Glasgow 9-6 up, but a poor cross-field kick from full-back Ruaridh Jackson was intercepted by winger Tom James. A couple of quick passes later and scrum-half Kieran Hardy was racing through for the game's first try.

The Scarlets had momentum and next centre Paul Asquith crossed from close range before winger Steff Evans raced onto his own kick and dotted down in the left corner.

That made it 25-9 and the Warriors were left to chase the game.

Glasgow hit back when Thomson crossed in the 64th minute and converted to make it 25-16.

Six minutes from time Huw Jones' incredible off-load set up centre partner Stafford McDowall to score from a couple of metres out.

That was 25-21 and although the Scarlets lost back-row Josh Macleod to the sin bin late on for killing the ball the visitors held on.
