WALES superstar Louis Rees-Zammit could be set to jump aboard the oriental gravy train after Mie Honda Heat made an offer to sign him when his contract with Gloucester runs out this summer.
Scouts from the NFL have been keeping tabs on Rees-Zammit, 22, but Honda, who competed in the First Division of Japan‘s Rugby League One, have made him a very lucrative offer to move to the Far East.
Former Italy boss Kieran Crowley coaches Honda Heat who have got Pablo Matera and Franco Mostert on their playing roster and have the financial muscle to blow any offers from Gloucester out of the water.
The Lions tourist joined the Cherry and Whites in 2018, and he became their youngest-ever Premiership player at 18 years and 70 days. He has also been on the radar of French clubs.
They sat up and took notice of Rees-Zammit when he scored five tries at the World Cup last year, which included a hat-trick against Georgia to take his tally to 14 in his 32 appearances on the international stage.
The move wouldn’t be as savage a blow for Wales boss Warren Gatland as it would be for Gloucester. Rees-Zammit has 31 caps – more than the required number of 25 that are needed to remain eligible for selection.
