Fifty years ago this week, the Lions flew to New Zealand via Australia. On board was a player in the midsummer of his career who, given his capacity to dematerialise when surrounded by defenders, could probably have transported himself there. Barry John returned home to a coronation after inspiring a first series victory over the All Blacks, but within eight months he had abdicated, leaving behind questions of what more he could have achieved and memories that will never fade.
