Sale Sharks sign Rob Webber to contract extension to solidify strong hooker department

Sale Sharks have confirmed Rob Webber has agreed a new contract which will see him play for the club through to the summer of 2021.

Days after the Premiership side announced the signing of hooker Akker van der Merwe from their Super Rugby namesakes, Webber’s new deal will extend his stay in the North-West by an additional 12 months.

The 32-year-old has contributed tries from the pack, trailing only international wing duo Denny Solomona and Chris Ashton in Sale’s try-scoring charts this season.

Pleased to have played a part in Sale’s turnaround from an early season milieu, Webber testified to the squad’s capability in pushing for honours this season with a Challenge Cup quarter-final to come next month against Connacht.

“As the squad continues to grow, I’m confident we can challenge for honours” Webber said. “I’m enjoying my rugby and I’m pleased with Dimes’ and the coaches’ continued faith in me. It’s great to have signed an extension to my contract.”

Sale Sharks director of rugby Steve Diamond added: “We’re delighted that Rob has agreed to stay with us for a further season.

“He has been fantastic over the last couple of seasons and has really come into his own since joining.

“He puts in a lot of hard work day in day out and is extremely committed to the club and our vision, he is an integral part of the pack that we are building here at Sale and the experience he has in the Gallagher Premiership is second to none.”

Webber moved to the AJ Bell Stadium for the start of the 2017-18 season after leaving Wasps, and has gone on to make 66 appearances for Sale since his arrival.
