LONDON Scottish made the most of their opportunities to take the win with their clinical red zone efficiency proving the difference.
Chinnor’s inability to deal with the last few minutes of the first half cost them dear. They conceded two tries in four minutes when leading 12-7.
Chinnor director of rugby Nick Easter said: “Our mistakes cost us, we played as ever to the end but must take our chances. It’s a learning curve and we’ll get there.”
Scottish took the lead when Jonny Law got on the end of a superb break from the dangerous William Simonds on nine minutes.
Chinnor struck back immediately when Luke Carter made a searing break and when he chipped the full-back kept in the hunt and was first to the bouncing ball.
Chinnor dominated for large swathes of the half and took a deserved lead when Keston Lines crashed over on 32 minutes. A magnificent offload from Rob Hardwick put Carter away, who linked with talismanic captain Willie Ryan. Ryan careered to within a metre and Lines did the rest.
But Chinnor failed to deal with the restart and Simonds made inroads which gave the impressive Will Trenholm the opportunity to score and take the lead.
With time running out in the half, Chinnor’s indiscipline cost them as a penalty gave the visitors a chance to launch an attack. On-loan Harlequins back row Trenholm showed his cutting edge and a super dink from Josh Bellamy was expertly finished off by Roma Zheng to give London Scottish a barely believable 21-12 lead at the break.
Bailey Ransom went close for Scottish but superb Morgan Passman defence saved a try.
Chinnor had a try ruled out but did manage to score after several pick and goes led to Nathan Chamberlain cross kicking to the mercurial Kieran Goss, who caught the ball on the back foot and stepped inside the cover to score under the posts with nine minutes to play to make it 21-19.
But more Chinnor ill-discipline allowed Josh Bellamy to kick a penalty to make the game safe for Scottish.
Scottish director of rugby Brian Redpath said: “We managed to win the key plays and our extra quality was too good for Chinnor.”
