Old Redcliffians …42
THE BREATH-TAKING performance of Lex Van Keergergen proved instrumental in guiding Old Redcliffians to a winning season finale against Barnstaple.
After releasing the proverbial shackles the two teams launched everything into scoring as many points as possible, with the lure of promotion long gone and the danger of relegation averted.
And in number eight Van Keergergen, the hosts had the game’s outstanding player, with the loose forward nigh on unplayable from the base of the scrum.
He scored two of Redcliffians’ scores before the interval – Ash Jarvis and Tom Ford also on the scoresheet – which opened up a 14-point lead. Ryan Lee and Albert Stretch had both replied for the game’s visiting outfit.
They weren’t helped by the temporary dismissal of Matt Gohl but they were right back in it when Stretch reached over for his second after the restart.
Redcliffians, though, had other ideas, and they weren’t to be denied. Jarvis scooted over to complete a brace of his own, before the marauding Van Keergergen hit his hat-trick. Ash Groves also completed an immaculate day from the tee, improving all six of his team’s tries.
