SCHOOLS RUGBY
Christ College laid down a huge marker ahead of the Rosslyn Park 7s next month after claiming the Brecon 7s title last weekend.
The hosts won a perfect seven wins from seven on the way to their first victory in the tournament this century.
Christ breezed through the group stages with four wins from four over tough opposition in sixtime champions Millfield, Coleg y Cymoedd, Dean Close and Collegiate.
From there, the Welsh school piled on a mammoth 83 points in their quarter-final and semi-final wins over Clifton College and Glantaf respectively to set up a final with their oldest rivals, Llandovery College.
Christ’s tournament momentum carried over into the final as an emphatic 39-12 win sees them announce themselves as one of the favourites at Rosslyn Park 7s.
In the plate, Hartpury College beat Dean Close 29-7 in the final. They conceded just 24 points in their three knockout games.
Elsewhere, Cranleigh’s impressive outing at the Hampton School Founders’ Day 7s saw them claim back-to-back titles in the tournament on Wednesday.
After falling to London Irish ACE side Bishop Wand 10-7 in their opening game, the Surrey-based school promptly turned it around to win their next three games and top Group B.
In reaching their seventh straight Hampton 7s final, Cranleigh faced a familiar foe in Hampton as the two sides met for the fifth time in the final in the last seven years.
The hosts entered the final with a perfect record in the group stages, recording impressive wins over Epsom College, Hurstpierpoint, John Fisher and Ipswich College to set up the chance to win their home tournament.
But Cranleigh were too strong on the day as they toppled Hampton 29-12, leaving their opening game loss as a distant memory, to claim the title for the second year running and giving them their fourth win in this tournament since 2012.
