Downes double eases champions’ nerves

CHAMPIONS Merthyr bounced back from their defeat at RGC with an emphatic home win.
Ebbw drew first blood with a 40-metre Dan Haymond penalty but Merthyr were over for the first try three minutes later through Rhys Williams from a maul, with Rhys Jones converting.
Haymond’s second successful kick brought the score back to 7-6 before a strong burst from Damian Welch increased Merthyr’s lead. Jones again adding the extras to make the score 14-6 on the half-hour.
