CARDIFF marched into the quarter-finals of the WRU National Cup after victory over 2017 champions RGC in Colwyn Bay.
It has been 22 years since the seven-time former winners last lifted the cup and 12 since they last made the final.
This win for the Blue and Blacks was their fifth on the bounce in league and cup since the turn of the year and their second over the Gogs this season.
Steve Law’s side took the lead through skipper Joey Tomlinson following a break, with the try converted by Gareth Thompson, but the hosts then hit back with a penalty through Billy McBryde.
The visitors then went over again through Adam Jones to make it 12-3, with the conversion missed by Thompson.
RGC cut the gap to just four points by the break, with Iolo Evans collecting a beautifully weighted kick to the corner from McBryde and touching down.
Mark Jones’ men then went went ahead for the first time in the match after the re-start through Evans, with McBryde converting but, that lead did not last long with Llywarch ap Myrddin going over.
Thompson converted to put Cardiff back in front 19-15.
Max Llewellyn’s try all but made the tie safe for the capital club. Thompson missed the conversion but he had the final say with a penalty in the closing moments to seal victory for Cardiff.
