Paul Rees: Don’t ban criticism of the TMO

Paul Rees believes coaches should be free to question the TMO system as World Rugby searches for ways to speed up reviews without sacrificing accuracy or the flow of the game.

Immediately after New Zealand’s victory over Italy last weekend, their head coach Dave Rennie bemoaned the time that was taken up by interventions from the television match official.

“The TMO came in a lot tonight,” he said. “It is hard to celebrate a try in the modern game – you have to wait until the ball has been kicked off at halfway to high five.”
Super Rugby has this year taken measures to reduce the influence who is restricted to reporting acts of foul play and incidents in try scoring moments, but the Nations Championship is under World Rugby control and the interference is constant.
