A contradiction of Steve Borthwick’s England is that his gameplan is largely conservative but he is more radical when it comes to selection.

He has not been afraid to give youth a chance – Henry Pollock scored a hat-trick against Fiji last weekend and Noah Caluori got one on debut – and he has kept Marcus Smith in the mix even when unwilling to operate the Harlequin at outside-half.
Smith started the Fiji game at full-back and finished it at scrum-half when replacement Alex Mitchell suffered a hamstring strain, by which time the 14-man islanders were spent.
