Nothing holds a mirror up to all that is wrong with the elite end of English rugby more than the death of Wasps as a professional club.
That the last and cruellest cut came from the RFU, which withdrew its offer to Wasps of a place in the Championship on Thursday, was a sure sign of the ineptitude of the governing body, and its inability to put in place the regulatory standards that is one of the main reasons for its existence.
