Ed Slater has urged the government to increase funding for research into motor neurone disease after England 2003 World Cup winner Lewis Moody revealed that he is suffering with the illness.
Slater, the former Leicester and Gloucester second row who was diagnosed with MND in 2022, said: “We need governments and major institutions to step up, fast-track treatments and support people living with MND properly.
“Every year we delay, more people lose their voices, their independence and their lives. It’s that simple.
“Fundraising helps fill the gaps but it shouldn’t be up to families and friends or the public to fund basic progress.
“I don’t have a specific message for Lewis other than I am absolutely here for you, whenever that is. He’s a tremendous guy with a wonderful family.”
