Italy, who were facing Wales for the third time this season, recorded their best ever placing at the tournament as they ran out 31-23 winners, to gain seventh place.
Wales had a decent start as Sion Davies scored their first try but Italy played their way into the match as Wales’ discipline began to cost them.
Franceso Braga was impeccable off the boot and Edoardo Todaro impressed at full-back. Nelson Casartelli was at his destructive best and was rewarded with a brace of tries for his efforts. The match was blighted by several brawls as desperation crept into Wales.
