England fall behind France after opening day

Caitriona Finn pulled the scores level with an intercept try, and Alma Atagamen's try put Ireland ahead 12-7. Molly Molly Bunker set up Sarah Parry for England's second try, converted by Bunker and Abigail Pritchard completed a flowing England backline move for a third try in the corner.

England were then held to a 19-all draw with . Alessia Cagnotto scored the first try for Italy, cancelled out by Solana Shaw de Leon after a kix up in the Italian defence.

With the Italy pack on the front foot, Vittoria Zeni added a second try but England hit back with Iley Bailey powering over.

A yellow card to Ellie Wilson reduced England to 14 players and Italy forward Alice Antonazzo crashed over. Italy went down to 14 with two minutes to go and England won a scrum against the head which set up Isabel van der Straaten to score. Natalee Evans converted to tie the game.

Ireland beat Italy 20-0 with tries from Emma Brogan, Sarah Purcell, Alma Atagamen and Leah Irwin.

Wales secured a 12-0 victory over with tries from Seren Lockwood and Ffion Davies. Earlier in the day Wales lost 31-12 to an impressive France team that also beat Scotland 34-0.

Meanwhile, on the opening day of the U18 Men's Six Nations competition being held in Parma, Italy, James Linegar slotted a match winning conversion to hand England a dramatic 36-35 victory over fierce rivals Wales.

England opened the scoring as flanker Patrick Clark burrowed over from close range and were further in front through Jonny Weimann's score.

Chris James hit back for Wales off a lineout and they were level when a penalty try was awarded for illegally collapsing a maul as Patrick Hogg was sent to the sin bin.

England scored their third try through captain Connor Treacy but the seesaw contest continued as Tom Bowen crossed on the stroke of half time.

Wales captain and Millfield centre Steffan Emanuel got over to enhance his side's lead before George Pearson scored a breakaway try off an interception for England.

Linegar gave England a one-point lead with 10 minutes to play through a penalty but Wales winger Bowen put his team back in front with his second try.

Replacement hooker George Knowles scored a last gasp try to give Linegar the chance to snatch victory for England.

Elsewhere, Scotland beat Georgia 22-14, Italy saw off Portugal 30-14 and France demolished Ireland 50-7.
