Fiji take honours as they get better of Japan

PACIFIC NATIONS CUP

won the Pacific Nations Cup after beating 14-men 35-12 in Tokyo in coach Simon Raiwalui's third win from three games.

Fiji, who had climbed back into the world's top 10 for the first time since the start of Rugby 2019 with their 33-19 win over last week, started fast with captain Waisea Nayacalevu getting the first try three minutes in.

Japan openside Pieter Labuschagne was red carded for a high tackle on Vilimoni Botitu and Fiji capitalised with tries from loosehead Eroni Mawi and scrum-half Simione Kuruvoli to make it 21-0 at half-time.

Replacement Frank Lomani scored the fourth before Japan scored twice through Fijian-born winger Jone Naikabula and Semisi Masirewa with Lomani scoring his second for Fiji to close out the victory.

The flying Fijians now head back to Fiji for two weeks' preparation before heading to for their World Cup warm-up Test against on August 20.

Samoa proved too strong for Tonga in Apia as they clinched a four-try 34-9 bonus-point victory. Hooker Sama Malolo, flanker Miracle Fai'ilagi, inside centre Duncan Paia'aua and replacement scrumhalf Melani Matavao crossed the whitewash with fly-half Alai D'angelo Leuila finishing with a 14-point haul.

Japan stay 12th in the world rankings, Samoa drop from 10th to 13th, with Tonga 15th.
