Wales to travel to South Africa for three match summer series

Pieter-Steph du Toit

Wales will travel to South Africa to play a three-Test series this summer.

The world champions will host Wales in Pretoria on July 2, a week later in Bloemfontein and finally in Cape Town on July 16.

It will be Wales’ first trip to South Africa since 2014, when they lost 38-16 in Durban, before suffering a 31-30 defeat in Nelspruit.

Wales have won four of their last six Tests against the Springboks, but lost on all 10 occasions in South Africa.

After the Wales series, the Springboks will start their Rugby Championship campaign against New Zealand on 6th August.

Last summer, the Boks overcame a first Test deficit to win 2-1 against the British and Irish Lions.

SA Rugby chief executive Jurie Roux said in a statement: “It’s exciting to announce such a strong list of Springbok fixtures this season after a successful 2021 season for the team.

“Pending the return of crowds to our Tests and with the Covid-19 pandemic still presenting challenges throughout the world, we understand the fluid nature of match schedules.

“But it is important for us that the team face quality opposition as we gear up to the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.”
