Hammer man Halpin hit back for the Paddies

GARY Halpin hurled the hammer far enough to qualify for the 1987 World Athletics Championships in Rome. His best effort there was nothing compared to the one he hurled at the All Blacks on the opening weekend of the World Cup eight years later.
As double whammies go, it has still to be beaten – blasting his way through two-thirds of the New Zealand back row for an early try and following up with a double-handed, middle-fingered salute at the Kiwis for good measure.
