Nottingham captain Dan Montagu moves on

Nottingham Rugby have announced that current captain Dan Montagu will not be signing a new deal with the club.
The 32-year-old lock has decided to move on to pastures new, after a total of seven seasons, over two separate spells with the club.
Montagu first signed with the Green and Whites back in the 2006/07 season, making his debut in November of 2006, away at Exeter Chiefs. He then moved on to Bristol at the start of the 2009/10 season, before returning to Nottingham in the summer of 2012, going on to be named club captain for the 2015/16 campaign.
Unfortunately, due to injury, Montagu’s final season with the club was cut short, with the 6’4” second rower making his final appearance in a Green and White jersey during December’s 14-13 home win over Yorkshire Carnegie.
In total, the Australian forward made 169 appearances for Nottingham, scoring 18 tries, and was ever present during the club’s 2013/14 Greene King IPA Championship campaign.
Deciding to explore new career opportunities outside of professional rugby, Montagu will continue to be involved with the sport at amateur level and will no doubt remain a prominent figure in the Nottinghamshire rugby community for many years to come.
Director of rugby Simon Beatham said: “We’re all very sad to see ‘Monty’ go. He’s been such an integral part of this club over the last ten years and has been a fantastic ambassador for Nottingham Rugby during his time here.
“He’s 50th on our all-time player appearance list, which tells you everything you need to know about the time and effort that he’s put into the club over the years and on behalf of everyone here, I want to thank him for all his hard work and for being a key driver in defining the culture of our club. In the professional era few players commit to one club so much. I was delighted when he was made captain and role that he justly deserved and one which he took to superbly.
“I wish him every success in the future and life after professional rugby. I know he’s going to be staying local to Nottingham, so I hope we’ll continue to see him at The Bay on a regular basis, where he knows that he’ll always be very welcome.”
