I HAVE been increasingly upset at the constant advice being given to players at the Rugby World Cup.
I believe that remarks such as ‘stay, no, yes, release, keep onside, roll away’ etc etc are all distracting, confusing, worrying, and upsetting to the players.
All these players in the World Cup are professionals and should have a very good grasp of the laws. The referee should clearly blow the whistle, clearly state the offence and finally clearly state the penalty for the offence.
For example ‘knock on red No.8, scrum down blue ball’. Or ‘poor tackle No.6. No arms used, and too late making contact with the head – red card please leave the field’. I do, however, welcome the much more positive assistance of the assistants and the quality use of the TMO.
Let the games flow by all means with sensible refereeing but we do not need the running commentaries of some referees who seem to enjoy the sound of their own voices and sometimes labour the point at issue with the players.
