Why cut funds for Mickey Mouse cup?

THE WRU announced a record turnover of £97m which would be impressive if it were not for the fact that they intend to cut the funding for the Welsh Premiership clubs from £90k each to £50k per year.

Rather than support the traditional backbone of Welsh rugby, the money saved will be invested in yet another Mickey Mouse competition, a regional U23 league which will be lucky to attract any supporters outside the players’ families and coaches.

Chairman Martyn Phillips (salary £340k) and the WRU have also decided to reduce the Premiership from 16 to 12 teams – thus annual funding will drop from £1.4m to £600k.

Welsh rugby is in danger of dying out so long as the WRU continue to concentrate on the national and regional teams.
