The turn of the century was as notable for the things that failed to happen as it was for those that did: there was no Armageddon, no “Millennium Bug”, no resurrection of Elvis Presley live on prime-time television.
But something significant definitely occurred in rugby and it went by the name of Italy, causing many followers of the game to spend the next 25 years wondering if the Six Nations might have been better off with Elvis or the “Bug”, if not the A-word.
