Billy Twelvetrees will leave England‘s tour of Argentina and travel to Australia to join the British & Irish Lions.
The England centre, who was outstanding against Argentina last Saturday, will travel Down Under as back line cover as the Lions management is sweating on the fitness of a few players.
Leicester centre Manu Tuilagi had to leave the pitch in the first half against the Reds last Saturday with a shoulder injury while Northampton-bound George North didn’t comeback on the pitch after the break yesterday against the Combine Country.
Jonny Sexton and Owen Farrell are also struggling with slight niggles and Warren Gatland pointed out Twelvetrees, who can cover the fly-half and centre position, will help reduce the workload on the Lions backs.
He said: “The nature of a Lions tour means that there will inevitably be knocks which take time to recover from.
“The whole squad have worked hard but a lot of the backs have doubled up over the last two games, either starting or from the bench.
“Billy played well in the first Test for England and he provides that versatility to cover a variety of positions.”
