SUPER Rugby Pacific outfit Moana Pasifika is leaving the competition due to ongoing financial pressures and the inability to sustainably fund the franchise beyond the 2026 season.
Since joining the competition in 2022 alongside Fijian Drua, Moana Pasifika has relied on government grants and World Rugby funding. The Pasifika Medical Association Group acquired majority ownership in 2024 but the franchise has struggled to secure long-term investment and is “no longer viable”.
“This decision comes after extensive consideration of the financial, operational, and strategic realities facing the franchise as well as professional rugby in New Zealand,” a statement from the franchise read.
“Despite the tireless dedication of players, staff, and supporters, it is no longer viable to continue the franchise at this level of competition.”
New Zealand Rugby remains open to engaging with any parties interested in keeping Moana Pasifika in Super Rugby Pacific.
Drua head coach Glen Jackson described the news as “devastating” saying the Pacific presence in Super Rugby Pacific is vital to the competi- tion’s identity. “It’s called Super Rugby Pacific for a reason,” Jackson said. “Both Moana and the Drua have brought a different aspect to the whole competition. I know they have tried really hard … we are Pacific brothers and our hearts are with them.”

Moana’s All Black centre Ngani Laumape, below, is being linked with a move to Harlequins while Chiefs scrum-half Xavier Roe has reportedly signed for Sale. They missed out on resigning Springboks scrum-half Faf de Klerk, who has opted to join the Cheetahs after his stint in Japan.
