PROMISING young blind-side Will Greenwood has soared to new heights since signing for Fylde in the summer and is relishing the new challenges and expectations thrust upon him in National Two North.
Greenwood’s extraordinary talents earned him the captaincy of his county‘s U20 team, Lancashire, before proudly leading them to victory in the County Championship tournament at Twickenham in June.
He told The Rugby Paper: “It was an extremely proud day of mine and it meant a lot to both me and my family. It’s always been a childhood dream of mine to run out at Twickenham never mind captain my county and win all at once!
“The atmosphere was amazing due to the overwhelming amount of support us lads received from family and friends both before, during and after the game, it was a surreal experience and one I will never forget.”
Greenwood says the physicality of senior rugby is next level compared to U20s – and it’s a big jump from playing for Garstang, whom he left in the summer.
“National league is definitely a significant step up from the rugby which I was playing previously,” he said. “As I have said to lots of people in level eight, at the end of the day you are still playing against grown men who are there to play a competitive game of rugby, and I think the competitiveness of lower tier rugby is really not appreciated enough as there is some amazing rugby played.
“However, I have definitely noticed the step up, especially the pace of the game and the ball in play time which is how we like to play at Fylde.
“I wasn’t overwhelmed by that – having played lots of county and regional rugby in the last two summers it wasn’t a shock to the system in comparison to the high level of physicality in National Two North.”
Fylde were handed their first loss since October last weekend in a tight contest that saw Hull take the spoils by only three points, However, Greenwood thinks the team have what it takes for a top two finish.
“We still have aspirations to finish top two, and I think the results from these next couple of games will set a tone for how we finish this season. We have every chance to get two good results from these games with both fixtures earlier on in the season being competitive,” said Greenwood.
“There is no easy win in this league, but if we implement what we have been working on in training there’s no reason why we can’t reach top two, which we set out to do at the start.”
On a personal level, Greenwood wants to keep pushing as far as he can, adding: “My coaches are supportive in providing me with that extra detail which helps me develop.
“I am always really eager to implement that into my game to take it to the next level.”
