Having had a first taste of international rugby this season, Dan Edwards is now eager for more as he sets his sights on Wales‘ summer tour of Japan.
The Ospreys fly-half made his Test debut as a replacement away to France in the Six Nations opener and then came on for a second cap versus Italy in Rome.
He sat out the remaining Championship matches as Gareth Anscombe and Jarrod Evans were drafted into the squad. But he has been in fine form for his region and is a strong contender for the trip to Japan.
“It’s a goal of mine for this summer,” said the 22-year-old.
“Everyone wants to play for Wales, there’s no shying away from the fact. That’s the dream as a youngster. It’s just down to me to perform and then hopefully get a crack.”
First Cap
Edwards’ first cap came inside half an hour against the French in Paris back in January after his Ospreys team-mate Owen Watkin suffered a serious knee injury.
“I didn’t really expect to get on that early,” he admitted.
“I felt quite bad because I had joked with Owen about getting on early and I was the one who went on for him. It’s something you don’t want to happen to anyone.
Reflecting on his time with Wales, he said: “It was a great experience. Those eight weeks in camp were really good. I learned a lot from the players and the management.
“I’ve come back into the Ospreys camp and fitted in pretty seamlessly. I have absolutely loved being back. I’ve been playing every week, which has been great and I’ve been happy with my form.
“I’m going out, enjoying every week. That’s my main goal. If I enjoy a game and play with a smile on my face, I play better.
“That’s when I’m at my best. I’m quite a confident person. I won’t shy away from much. I make mistakes as well, but I just think that’s part of my game.”
The Port Talbot-born Edwards is currently out in South Africa, as the Ospreys round off their regular season with games against the Sharks and Lions.
“It’s great touring this country,” he said.
“All the different parts of it are really good and playing in different conditions. It’s great to see some stuff, I am lucky to be part of it.”
