Too many teams in Champions Cup, says Mark McCall

Mark McCall believes cutting the number of teams will help the Investec Champions Cup regain its elite status.
As it stands, the competition’s rules stipulate that the top eight from each of the three participating leagues qualify, meaning 80 per cent of the teams in the Gallagher Premiership do so.
The Rugby Paper understands that Champions Cup organisers may look to review this before the start of the 2025/26 season.
But it would be a bold call to implement any changes to the qualifying criteria at such a late stage in the current Premiership, URC and Top 14 campaigns.
