Clifton edge win over Luctonians

ST PATRICK'S Day at Mortimer Park saw Luctonians up against Clifton in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.

However, Clifton stole the victory in what was a low-scoring match.

Lucs penalty count was high, nonetheless and it was no surprise when prop Conor Deignan was carded for persistent infringements after 20 minutes.

Clifton took full advantage and scrum half Mitchell Spencer lofted a high ball into the corner, where wing Zakaria Hamid took the catch and dived over, with Luke Cozens kicking to give Clifton a seven-point advantage, which they would maintain until half time.

Lucs were fast out of the blocks after the restart, when Clifton's centre Marcus Nel received a yellow for cynical play, Lucs Tom Jones stepped up to give the home side their first points. The momentum changed and pressure on the Clifton defence saw the home side score their only try to give Luctonians an 8-7 lead.

It was a grind for both sides, however as defences and the high tackle count took its toll with numerous stoppages for injuries.

Despite valiant effort, the home side couldn't hang on and Clifton were awarded a penalty at 71 minutes, which Cozens kicked to gain a narrow victory for the visitors.
