Eye contact costs Carreras nine weeks

NEWCASTLE winger Mateo Carreras, 21, has been banned for nine matches after admitting intentional contact with the eye of Wasps’ Josh Bassett.
Carreras was cited after match officials missed the first-half incident on March 19. The mid-range offence carried an 18-week ban but Carreras was given a 50 per cent cut in way of mitigation.
He had intended to ‘irritate’ Bassett but ‘had not intended to cause any harm’, said a statement from the disciplinary panel.
