Gregor Townsend has named six uncapped players in his 33-man Scotland squad to tour Canada, USA and Argentina next month.

With new blood set to join the forwards and backs, the Scotland head coach has appointed ever-present Edinburgh hooker Stuart McInally as captain, as John Barclay is one of seven rested.

All six uncapped players are aged 23 or younger, they are: flanker James Ritchie, lock Lewis Carmichael, back row Matt Fagerson, scrum-half George Horne, and fly-half duo Adam Hastings and James Lang.

Aiming for a positive tour ahead of next year’s World Cup, Townsend commented: “There are twin goals for this tour – the first is to build on the work we’ve done so far this season and finish with improved performances. We also have the Rugby World Cup in our thoughts, as this will be our last tour before we leave for Japan next year.

“Touring and staying together for four weeks and experiencing different environments will be very informative – seeing how players get on with each other, how much they improve and how they rise to each challenge we face on tour.”
