Saracens stars to organise Sevens tournament

Saracens RFC

Allianz Park will be hosting a brand new Sevens tournament on Saturday, July 12 following an initiative from stars David Strettle and Matt Stevens.
The ‘7s and the City’ one-day event will stage an elite tournament as well as a social, women and veteran 10s competitions.
But with the Commonwealth games only two weeks after, what was set to be an invitational elite tournament is likely to turn into an international one with many national teams competing in Glasgow looking to finalise their preparation.
These teams will be revealed in the coming weeks during the event’s official launch at the Allianz Park.
Around 70 teams will take part in all the rugby competitions and the ones reaching the semi-finals and finals will also have the opportunity to play on Saracens’ famous 4G pitch.
Live music will be played around the stadium all day whilst the netball and 4fittest competition will also take place, once the final games are played the festivities will then carry on into the night.
“Between the rugby, netball, 4fittest challenge, live music and other activities, people will be able to come down and have an awesome day out,” Strettle said.
“Matt and myself approached the club CEO Edward Griffiths about staging it at Allianz Park five months ago and he has fully supported it.
“Due to the layout of Allianz Park we are able to have 3 big sporting competitions running side by side. The 4g pitch, indoor athletics facility and outdoor track can all be utilised so the spectators and competitors get to enjoy all the sports on show”
“We’ve had a lot of interest from international teams too which is great. Having these teams involved will help us promote the tournament and we are currently in discussion with several broadcasters to Televise the Elite competition.”
