IT’S probably fair to say that the late Ray McLoughlin, who died earlier this week aged 82, is Connacht’s most famous rugby son. The hugely intelligent prop won 41 Ireland caps and toured New Zealand twice with the Lions in 1966 and 1971. He was also the first Connacht man to captain Ireland.
The so-called Cinderella Province famously never won the Inter-provincial championship outright – they shared it three times in 1956, 1957 and 1965 with McLaughlin starring in the latter – but they have produced rather more top quality Ireland players than you might imag...
