The RFU can’t afford to sack Steve Borthwick even if they wanted to, with the under-performing England boss in line for a £3m payout if he losses his job.
Borthwick will be safe from the axe even if England crash out of the World Cup in the pool stages, as he is less than 12 months into a five-year deal that pays him £700,000 a year.

It would mean that Twickenham bosses would be looking at a massive seven-figure payout.
